Freedom

No matter what is the story like, what is the destiny of each characters, the game has only intention to define "what is the real freedom?"

In the Begining of the Story, "Free from the History which is in the hand of Occurian" is the motive that Vayne and Cid test the Manufacted Nethicite in Nabudis, that is the begining of the war between Nabradia, Dalmasca and the Empire, and then made Dalmascan lose their freedom.

Then, "Free from the Empire" Became the motive of Ashe and Vaan began their journey.

There is also a pirate who want to "Free from his Father addicted to the Nethicite", and his patner - Fran, who have "discarded Wood and village, then won her freedom".

Even though the villain - Gabranth, who "could not free from his brother even forgave himself as an Empire's Dog". Because their home country destroyed by the Empire, then Basch discarded Gabranth and thier ailing mother to Dalmasca.

Till the end of the story, with the help of the former Judge - Raddas who "didn't allow himself free from the guilt of Nabradia", Ashe cut the illusion of Rasler off on the top of the Pharos and give up the power to revenge as what Occurian want. People finally know the real freedom is "Free from the hatred and leave the past behind".

Symbolism

Symbolism plays a very important role in this story:

The Sky and Pirate

It¡¯s a symbol of Freedom.

The Ring left by Rasler

(and the Ring left by Reks) stand for the past Ashe (and Vaan) could not forgot. Balthier took Rasler's ring away from Ashe as a compensation and turn it back when "finding something more valuable" stand for the leitmotiv of the story - "Free from the hatred and leave the past behind". Although the translation in North American version is not exactly right compare to the Japanese Version (in the originally version it doesnot define "who find the more valuble things"). But it still a wise Ending at last when the ring turn back to Ashe's hands. one side it means Balthier still alive, in the other side we all have found the real freedom far more better than the hatred and the past, don't you?

Galbana Lily

Galbana Lily is a kind of flower bloom in the Dalmasca Desert. Because of the bad weather, it is rare to see one blooms in the sandstorm. Is there any other meaning behind?

  1. Galbana Lily is one of Rek¡¯s favorites, Vaan just found one for his dead brother in the beginning of the story. But this one was soon trampled by the Imperial Chocobo.
  2. When crossing the Sandsea, Ashe and Vaan met the a Urutan ¨C Yensa who is looking for help. Although with the help of human the Urutan ¨C Yensa defeated their enemy, but their Queen still punished the one who looking for help to death. Instead a flower bloom in the Sandsea which is just like the one Vaan found in Dalmasca Estersand.
  3. Mt Bur-Omisace, Al-cid
To think I stand before the Lady Ashe. It is truly an honor. I see it is true after all. Ah, stunning is Dalmasca¡¯s desert bloom.

These things all lived in rugged environment. They have to face sandstorm, natural enemy or the Empire.

Maybe Galbana Lily just used to hit Dalmascans under the domination of the Empire. Only one or two can bloom in such a bad condition just like the one bloom after the Urutan ¨C Yensa dead, because he find the Sandsea¡¯s treasure? Or he left the racial hatred behind for human¡¯s help? There are too much question left to the user themselves.

The Sun-cryst

Neithicite just like a mirror reflect the desires of human and make a illusion in front of the one who desires. The Sun-cryst is the mother of Neithicites, maybe we can see more than our lust.
In Japanese version, The Sun-cryst use the name of Ììê–¤ÎÀO ¡±, it means ¡°sun cocoon¡± in English. On the top of the Pharos we saw the Sun-cryst just like a huge Nethicitewith innumerable filament around.

In Chinese, there is a idiom called ¡°×÷¼ë×Ô¸¿¡± to describe those who get caught in one's own trap. Just like the filament bind around the cocoon which spins by the silkworm itself. ¡°Bind somebody by oneself¡± just like what Ashe did in the story ¨C the past and hatred band her tightly, band the one who desires for the Nethicite and the Nethicite desires. The only way a butterfly can be free is to cut the filament herself. Maybe when Ashe and the Sun-cryst face to face, she knew what she should do.

The Sword of Kings and the Treaty-Blade

Ashe held two blades in her hand when she reached the top of the Pharos. One is the Sword of Kings which is found to destroy the power of Neithicite, another one is the Treaty-Blade which is Occurian gave Ashe to against the Empire and their Manufacted nethicites. They were hint to the different choice Ashe faced. When Gabranth appeared and told Ashe what he did in the past, the blaze of revenge flamed again in Ashe¡¯s mind. She threw off the Sword of Kings then grasp the Treaty-Blade tightly. But the words of Raddas and the reaction of Vaan put out the fire of revenge. Ashe finally cut the illusion and dropped the Treaty- Blade.

Expression

Maybe we could say Motive capture is far more important than any other RPG games in this time.? Because creators want a story not only talks in words but in scenes. That¡¯s made the story, the relationship between characters and their thoughts hard to be understood.

For example, Ashe touched the ring in her middle finger several times in the trip. It showed she was thinking Rasler again.

Vaan spoke nothing but looked down on such a Migelo when he sent the Imperials a bottle of Dalmascan Barose wine. ?

The story even said no words about the ¡®ring¡¯. Where did it come from? What did it mean to Ashe?Users just could find the answer through the scene.

When Vaan received Rasler¡¯s ring turn back from Balthier, he smiled meaningful but Penelo just showed a flush of joy (she noticed that Baltheir still alive). What did it mean in fact? Did this ring have any special meanings to Vaan?

These kinds of scenes were hardly to be noticed, therefore made an image that characters were undeveloped in the story.

Maybe story is shorter than any other Final Fantasy in this time, but it even expressed more. The dialogs, movements, expressions with different meanings display in the same time, not just to read or act the dialog as usual ¨C In this way Final Fantasy XII made its story worth to review.
